Description
The wine has a deep, dark ruby colour with purple tinges at the rim, reflecting its youth and concentration. It’s vibrant and visually appealing, indicative of a wine that is still in its prime.
The nose is incredibly complex and inviting, showcasing a beautiful balance of dark fruit, floral notes, and savoury elements. There are rich aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and plums, alongside subtle hints of red fruit like raspberry and black cherry. As the wine opens, layers of floral notes emerge—lilac and violet—along with an array of spices like cinnamon, clove, and a touch of sweet tobacco. The oak influence is present, but it’s well-integrated, offering nuances of toasted vanilla, cedar, and a slight smokiness that adds complexity without overshadowing the fruit. A faint minerality and a touch of graphite round out the nose, adding further depth to the profile.
On the palate, the 2021 Opus One is medium-to-full-bodied, with a rich yet velvety texture. The mid-palate is lush, with a harmonious blend of ripe fruit and savory elements, including hints of leather, cigar box, and a touch of dark chocolate. There’s also a subtle freshness from the bright acidity, keeping the wine lively and lifting the fruit profile.
The finish is long and persistent, with a lingering echo of dark fruit, spice, and oak. The tannins remain polished and fine, suggesting that while the 2021 Opus One is already approachable, it will benefit from some aging, continuing to develop additional complexity over the next 10-20 years. The wine finishes with a refined balance of fruit, earth, and a delicate touch of toasted oak, leaving a lasting impression.
